United Nations Development Programme and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan initiated joint project of "Support to the development of arbitration courts and other alternative methods of dispute settlement in the Republic of Uzbekistan". |

This project is developed for two years (from January 2008 till December 2009) and the project sum constitutes $300,065. The UNDP contribution in this project constitutes of $238,065 and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan of $62,000.
The main objective of the project is development of the arbitration courts and other alternative ways of dispute resolution through creation of the Arbitration Development Center under the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
To achieve this objective, the project will facilitate the delivery of following main inputs:
1. Establishing and development of institutional capacities of the Arbitration Development Center under the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan;
2. Research on the current situation of arbitration process and mediation in Uzbekistan;
3. Implementation of international standards of disputes resolution through training and certification of arbitration judges; encouragement of women arbiters and breaking the gender barrier;
4. Preparation of draft amendments to the legislation in the field of arbitration courts and trials.
Expected results
• To improve the quality of legal proceedings of the arbitration courts and increase trust of entrepreneurs to the system. In its turn, this will lead the relieving of economic courts that are extremely overloaded with the cases;
• Prepare recommendations and proposals on improvement of the activity and development of the arbitration courts in legislative level;
• Develop recommendations and concrete actions to ensure that the benefits of arbitration courts are of equal value to men and women and both categories are involved in the work of courts.
• Improve access to justice and to raise legal literacy of entrepreneurs and general population, both men and women.
